There is a good amount of information out there about self-help, goal setting, and time management. If you take a moment – just a moment – as like most folks you are obviously extremely busy and don’t have more than that to spare – to consider what you really want from your life. How do you want to live your life? What should your life be about? Then, how do you get there?
Some common things said that I don’t find particularly helpful. Strategies that are not strategies at all, but weak suggestions that are no match for other physical and psychological factors within all of us that inhibit the ability to succeed.
“Marriage? It’s a lot of work” – Great. Who signs up for a lot of work? Who wants to do a lot of work?
“Successful new business? Be prepared to fight through a lot of rejection and only by incredible determination you will have a chance” – ok, why bother?
“Lose weight? You must deprive yourself. Only through difficult will-power (which you will conjure from – who knows where) will you succeed, and lots of difficult physical exercise, by the way – that is critical.” – No wonder this weak suggestion almost never works.
It is possible to achieve what you want, but probably the more important question – WHAT do you really want – and more important than that – WHY do you want it?
The information is out there. The Internet has made most of the world’s information accessible, but with information overload – there is still the problem – how do I find that information that will really help?
Consider this as a strategy –
1. Think differently. You will reorient your thinking. Neural pathways in our brain guide our thoughts, reactions. The way be think. Our habits. iIt need not be a difficult or an arduous process to make changes, and it need not happen all at once, so there is no need to feel pressure to change.
2. Find a process. There are steps that can be followed to do whatever it is you want to do. Most of them are changing habits or thinking and if you are willing are much easier to change than you would think.
The goal of this site is to organize information that will be helpful to this process. Breaking bad habits, losing weight, or better performance at work are some things where these principles can be applied.
I am going on this journey too, so if you’re reading this – check back for more updates.
